舞台は四国・松山。美しく穏やかな海に囲まれた町で生まれ育った悦子(鈴木杏)は、京都大学に進んだ優秀な姉に比べ、不器用で勉強も苦手。両親の関心は姉がいつも独占していた。猛烈に勉強し何とか姉と同じ愛媛県立松山第一高に入学したものの、自分がびりっけつで、ぶらさがるようにして入学したことはわかりきっていた。始業式の後すぐに職員室に駆け込みボート部入部を希望するが、女子チームはないと門前払いをされてしまう。
